The Languedoc is an extremely historic area with a lot to offer. How about Carcassonne Cité, a listed UNESCO world heritage site. All along the region you find many influences from the Romans, the Crusaders, and life of French royalty. Endless vineyards on rolling hills, Cathar castles, abbeys, canyons, pittoresk villages with lovely churches, hot springs etc.

Easily accessible by train from Paris or Barcelona, and within driving distance from Provence or Bordeaux.

Even better, you can fly daily directly to Carcassonne with Ryanair from Edinburgh, East Midlands, London Stansted, Manchester, Cork, Dublin, Glasgow or Brussels.

Or you fly to Toulouse from Dublin, Edinburgh and London, only an hour away from Carcassonne by train or car.

Bike Tours

Cycling in France can be quite a challenge some people might say. Not if you come to Carcassonne to enjoy your ride on the ancient tow trails along the Canal du Midi. Or do you feel like exploring the pittoresk little villages with lovely abbeys and forever winding roads in the hills of the Corbières. Small roads with very little traffic, a great way to get around.

In Carcassonne are several good bikeshops where you can rent good e-bikes, mountainbikes and racebikes.

Wine tours

Ideally situated in the middle of four different wine regions in the Languedoc Roussillon, Carcassonne offers you the possibility to explore all the goodness and sunny delight called wine and even more important wine tasting! How about Cabardès, Minervois, Corbières, Limoux (home of the first sparkling wine in the world!)

Numerous chateaux’s, wine houses and wine caves, big and small, are happy to give you a tour and a good tasting! Do you prefer organic wines? Do not fear, more and more French vineyards are going back to traditional methods in harmony with nature to produce great wines.

Boat Tours or Barge Cruises

Carcassonne is perfectly located to make a great barge cruise on the famous Canal du Midi with its countless water locks. In several days you can sail down to the Mediterranean Sea or up to Castelnaudary.

Outdoor activity

You can do great rafting on the Aude or go canyoning through the narrow gorges of Galamus.

Feel like hiding from the sun? Cool down and go underground and visit impressive caves!

Hike along magnificent long distance marked footpaths and trails . You don’t need to walk for several days in a row to enjoy the rough nature of southern France. You can walk sections of the trails and hop on or of at a lot of different locations. Very often towns and villages have great local marked footpath’s and trails you can enjoy

Castles and abbey’s

If you like something more relaxed go and enjoy the hot springs of Rennes les Baines. Also famous for its castle Rennes le Chateau, known from the movie the The Da Vinci Code.

Speaking of castles in the Aude there are numerous impressive Cathar castle ruins to visit. Situated on isolated mountain ridges and strategic cliffs they are a silent souvenir of ancient brutal times. Bare in mind that besides Carcassonne nearly all of the other castles and ruins are only accessible you by foot. You park the car and then expect a often spectacular walk along mountainside trails from 15 mins up to an hour to visit the castle. They were build on strategic locations that were easy to defend, that also means difficult to reach. But totally worth the trip!

If you like the more sacred places to visit enter the world of ancient beautiful abbey’s. Most known are Fontfroide, Lagrasse and St. Hilaire. Magnificent places where the fast world of today gets to a rest.
